Help for Troubled Teenagers

The Boot Camp Concept

If you want to help troubled teenagers, then you might consider boot camp. The boot camp concept, historically, started as impoundment for adolescents who had committed crimes. In New Jersey and other states, boot camps can be privately owned or managed by the state. The settings are designed to challenge troubled teens with a number of physical and mental tests in a camp-like setting. These kinds of programs offer parents with a remedial option for dealing with and getting help for troubled teenagers.

Time Spent in Boot Camp

In most instances, teens do not stay for a long time at boot camp. Nevertheless, there are those camps that offer extended programs. Camps with programs that last for a long duration are often appropriate for teens who have proven to be defiant in their actions and behavior. These kinds of camps replicate military-type living with drills and training that concentrate on discipline and responsibility.

A Short-term Solution

Teens, in such environments, develop the traits needed in order to become reliable adults. The mission of the boot camp then is to eliminate rude or destructive behavior with an attitude that conveys regard and consideration. While boot camps can be quite effective for young people who display behavior problems that have just begun to surface, they are not the best remedies for teens who have established a pattern of poor behavior for a significant length of time.

Boot Camp is not the Right Remedy for Some Troubled Teens

As a result, short-term boot camps serve as a wake-up call for any teen who is on the brink of making some decisions that could adversely affect him the rest of his life. A teen boot camp, in its true form, supplies all the participants with uniforms (just as in the army). In addition, teens live in army-type barracks. Living conditions consist of bunk beds and lockers and teens are subjected to inspections and, as stated, a variety of drills. However, these kinds of solutions don’t work for every troubled teen out there. Some teens have too sensitive of natures to work out well in this kind of setting. Therefore, it may be better for parents to consider enrolling their child ion a boarding school.

Review Online Resources First

As an alternative, boarding schools direct teens in their school work so they become higher achievers academically. While such schools present a regimented program, students are not subjected to as “harsh a treatment” as can be found in boot camp facilities. Whichever kind of program, though, that you enter your child, you hold the key to a helpful solution. For any parents who need help with troubled teenagers, they can find the required resources online and through New Jersey-run or federally-funded agencies. Another option could be to seek help from a local health food store and ask for solutions with a child with health issues or addictions.
