Helping Teens Who Have Conduct Disorders

June 12th, 2008

Wikipedia defines Conduct Disorders as a psychiatric category that describes a pattern of repetitive behavior where the rights of others or the current social norms are violated. From this definition, the conclusion that may be drawn out is that individuals with Conduct Disorders are bad news. If you know someone who has this disorder, the first thing to do to help him or her is to learn more about the disorder. After all, it would be hard to extend help to someone when you have no idea as to what the implications of his or her illness are.

Beyond that, you can also consult with a mental health professional. In choosing a medical practitioner , opt for someone who specializes in teen’s mental health because there are various ways by which doctors diagnose and treat each case, and although each case of Conduct Disorder is special, it is still best to go for one who is trained in managing teens with Conduct Disorders. Another option is to explore the treatment options available. The purpose of this is to make the treatment less generalized and more individualized. Lastly, a person who sincerely wants to help a troubled teen who suffers from Conduct Disorders id to establish a support system for him or her, one that will involve the family, the friends, and the other members of that teen’s social circle.

Helping teens with Conduct Disorders is vital in upholding a community that thrives on being there for others. Recognizing the need to help teens is synonymous to the recognition that these teens are the future pillars of our society; thus they need to be tended to so that when their time comes, they will also be able to contribute well to the rest of the society.

Good News, Better News

June 12th, 2008

The number of teenagers who have Conduct Disorders are increasing. If you are among those who have Conduct Disorders, this is great news for you: Research has shown that children and teens who have been diagnosed with Conduct Disorders grew up to lead normal and healthy lives. Meaning, no run-ins with the law enforcers and behavioral problems that tend to keep them in trouble in one way or another. They are reported to do well as adults; responsible citizens who are law abiding and not at all wreaking havoc to the people around them.

Based on that research, it was also concluded that Conduct Disorder has both genetic and environmental components. Moreover, research also attests that a Conduct Disorder is not a dead end for those who are afflicted with it because there are promising treatments for this condition. This is in contrast with the reports that the treatment for this disorder is ineffective. Examples of effective treatment approaches include functional family therapy, multi-systemic therapy, and cognitive behavioral approaches which focus on building skills such as anger management. Pharmacological intervention alone is not sufficient for the treatment of conduct disorder.

Humor As The First Option

June 12th, 2008

The age-old antidote in chasing your temperaments away is still the ever-reliable humor. Humor can help ease your bad tempers and turn the negative emotions into something more positive. Why is this so? Well, for one, humor is one of the things that can give you a more balanced perspective on things. It is an effective means for taking the edge out of infuriating people and frustrating predicaments.

According to experts, the thing with angry people is their inability to see the other angle in a particular situation. For them, they are always right, and therefore, what they think or what they want to happen, should always be followed. It is important to use humor in order to take things on a lghter perspective; to take things on a more positive note. But there are two cautions in using humor. First, don’t try to just “laugh off” your problems; rather, use humor to help yourself face them more constructively. Second, don’t give in to harsh, sarcastic humor; that’s just another form of unhealthy anger expression.

What these techniques have in common is a refusal to take yourself too seriously. Anger is a serious emotion, but it’s often accompanied by ideas that, if examined, can make you laugh.

The Stage Of Change

June 12th, 2008

If there’s one stage in our lives where we would have to deal with change in almost all facets of our being, this would be the puberty stage. This stage, occurring between ages 8 and 13 in girls and ages 10 and 15 in boys, is a stage that characterizes the shift from childhood to adulthood. It is during this period when special hormones are released from the pituitary glands in order for the different parts of the body to grow and develop.

Veering away from the rather technical side of this stage, puberty is actually a period in our lives that is most difficult because of the complexities that it can bring. Aside from the hormonal and physical changes that occurs in our bodies during puberty, the social and emotional aspects of our lives are affected as well. Therefore, it is not enough to keep ourselves stuck on the physical changes alone, but on the other aspects as well.

For teens who are undergoing the puberty stage, they will also learn to appreciate the opposite sex as well, in a far greater extent than they used to when they were merely children. Sure, crushes and puppy loves have always been there, but as we start to grow old and mature, so does our feelings entail changes. This is the time when most teens start to get involve in relationships that are a little more than platonic in nature.

Of course, soliciting advice on romantic relationships would be extremely hard at this point, but the most general thing that we must consider is not to enter in intimate relationships unless we are ready to do so. Otherwise, our lack of maturity in handling relationships like these will not be realized to its full potential.

Mental Illness: The Truths And The Myths We Know

June 11th, 2008

As we know, there are several factors that contribute to a person’s affliction of mental illness. Some of these factors have to do with social factors, physical or biological factors, and psychological factors. Social factors are those that are brought about by the environment, physical or biological factors are related to genetics, while psychological factors are the other illnesses that can be compounded with a particular mental disorder.

In a nut shell, we only know very little about mental illnesses because we are not very exposed to these things. Do you know of myths and truths about mental illnesses? I sure do. There are popular misconceptions about mental illnesses that should be set straight, once and for all. Among these are the following:

All those who are afflicted with mental illness are violent people.

Of course not. Not all mentally ill individuals are violent, in fact, some of them are meek and timid and shy and withdrawn. The only reason why they have had mental illness is because of the environment they have grown up in.

People with mental illness are poor.

Contrary to this belief, mental illness cuts across all classes, all sectors, all races and all religions. Thus, we say that mentally ill people are actually diverse. There is no one trend to the type of people who are afflicted with mental illness, but certainly, their status in life has nothing to do with their illnesses.

Mental illness is caused by a weak character

Definitely not. Having a mental illness is not a free choice, though recuperating from it may be easier if the person who is afflicted with it has a strong character. Nevertheless, it is wrong to say that it is brought about by weak character.

Are You A Nympho?

June 11th, 2008

Preoccupations with sex are most common with teens nowadays. It’s a liberty that sociaety has allowed them to pursue, to the extent that the issues against premarital sex are now being ignored—as if they don’t exist at all. It is a common practice, even, to engage in sexual intercourse at a young age. In fact, it is more common to be sexually active than to be celibate.

With that in tow, the fact that sexual activities in teens are common and natural. But now, the trend is changing, and the preoccupations with sex, for some, have become an obsession. In cases such as these, this sexual behavior is no longer normal. It is now a serious condition called Compulsive Sexual Behavior, otherwise known as nymphomania.

Nymphomania is a condition that plagues men more often than women, but that is not to say that women canot be nymphomaniacs. The symptoms of nymphomania may include having multiple sexual partners or extramarital affairs, or having intercourse with anonymous individuals, excessive masturbation, exposing yourself in public, and engaging in sadistic and masochistic sexual practices.

The above mentioned signs and symptoms are the general ones. It is best to remember that disorders and misbehaviors are based on a case-to-case basis, and thus cannot be self-diagnosed. If you or a person you know exhibits the signs and symptoms mentioned, seek an experts’ advice immediately.

Education Beyond The Classroom Setting

June 11th, 2008

Nothing beats the feeling of accomplishment. Being able to overcome a challenge; being able to finish a task on your own is something that all of us feel is vital in bringing out positive feelings towards ourselves, as if we appreciate ourselves more because we know that we were able to attain a certain goal.

A special teen is no different.

While teens with special needs should be given more care and attention, they should also be treated like normal teens. On that regard, that means that they should be allowed to do things on their own, with less supervision in order for them to appreciate their worth and prove their value to themselves.

Even teens with special needs, whether they have learning disabilities or physical disabilities, whould be taught the art of independence. Parents and teachers of these teens should bear in mind that these teens are bound to grow up and leave their sheltered world. Hence, it is important to make them feel that they can cope with the challenges that life will bring them. One of the best ways by which they can feel that they have what is takes to succeed later on is to inculcate in them a sense of pride, independence, and self-confidence.

Away From The Sedentary Lifestyle

June 11th, 2008

I read an article a few days ago about the possibility that exercise might be the key for people to veer away from substance abuse. The article made mention of a study which found that youngsters and teens who reported to exercise everyday were half less likely to engage in illegal substance abuse activities such as smoking pot and the likes than the youngsters and teens with sedentary lifestyles do.

If this is true, then we’re on to a great solution to one of the biggest problems concerning drugs.

We all know that in spite of the hazards of substance abuse, a huge number of teens, youngsters, and even the adults, abuse certain illegal substances. This is the cause of violence, crimes, early pregnancies and the likes. In short, there are immeasurable negative effects of substance abuse to the society. The challenge now is to find an alternative that would put an end to this phenomena. If exercise id the key, so be it. But the greater challenge here, I think, is to have the teens and the youngsters do rigorous exercise.

Evidently, more and more young people are opting to lead sedentary lifestyles. They simply don’t enjoy engaging in physical activities as much as the others who belong in the older generation used to. Why is this so? I don’t know, either. Further surveys can be done to look into the reasons behind this. The New Age may be a contributing factor, if you ask me. But what’s important now is to ake people realize the importance of being physically active, and to make them start stretching their bones as soon as possible.

Beyond The Obvious

June 11th, 2008

In this day and age, a broken home, or a home wherein the mother and the father are legally separated from each other, is nothing new. In fact, it is a common occurrence that no one seems to lift an eyebrow upon learning that a certain family is “broken.” Due to its prevalence, people have have began to look into the issues of separation, including its ill effects on the members of the family. One of these effects is called attachment disorders.

Unlike other psychological disorders, attachment disorders can be passed on from one generation to another generation. But that is where the commonalities end. Other disorders are passed on through genes, but with attachment disorder, this is not the case. Attachment disorder can be passed on when the trauma that is experienced by one child leads him to suffer from this illness, and consequently, his or her treatment to the kids he or she will have when he or she becomes a father or a mother will reflect the same treatment that he or she has begotten from his parents. Thus the cycle continues, and it will not be broken unless something is done about it.

There are several kinds of attachment disorders. A child suffers from Avoidant Attchment Disorder is a child who avoids closeness and emotional connection due to his or her parents emotional unavailability or rejection. Meanwhile, he or she may be suffering from Disorganized Attachment Disorder when a child’s experience with his or her parents are bordered on traumatizing events and frightening occurences.
