A Take On Exercise

May 29th, 2008

Losing weight means a lot to teens because they perceive that an appealing body structure is one of the standards of beauty. This notion is, of course, debatable. But working on that assumption, it is thus important to choose a good method of losing weight.

Instead of bumming around and being a couch potato, teens ought to do some physical activity just so they can burn the fats that they have consumed. This is a safer and better way of losing weight compared to the other options that the market has opened to a lot of people, such as diet pills, surgeries like liposuctions and the likes. The benefits of exercise outweighs the speedy results of the aforementioned means for losing weight. Aside from the advantages of losing weight, exercise can also help in sharpening the mind of teens. It can also improve their sense of well-being, which reflects the way that they carry themselves.

In order to be able to stick to a good exercise routine, it is necessary for teens, as well as the other people who want to lose weight, to consider a physical activity that they like. In addition to that, their exercise routine should be something that they will not interfere too much with their daily routines so as not to disturb his or her daily activities.

Weight Loss Innovations

May 29th, 2008

Teens have also prided over physical appearances. It has always been a mantra for teens to look their best at all times, as this is one of the unwritten rules by which they feel that they are more accepted by their peers on a social context: With the priority on looking good set at maximum level, different aspects of beauty are also a major consideration. Among these are the body structure of a particular person, or in this case, the thinness of a teen. With the media setting a trend on leanness and with this trend becoming a fad for teens comes the obsession of teens in losing weight.

Excessive dieting, harmful diet pills, and surgeries are among the means employed in order to lose those extra pounds. However, these methods have proven to be hazardous and sometimes, not at all advisable for the long-term effects that it may carry. Now, though, an innovation is taking up heights as a schhol for weight loss is basking on the limelight.

Wellspring Academies are the world’s most effective programs for weight loss. Designed for children, teens, and young adults ages 11-24, students at its Academies demonstrate the best documented outcomes of any non-surgical weight loss intervention for any age group.

On Juvenile Delinquency and Learning Disabilities

May 29th, 2008

Based on statistics, 50 per cent of juvenile delinquents, or the under-aged individuals who engage in crimes and breaking of laws, were found to have learning disabilities. This does not mean that juvenile delinquents are categorized as those who have learning disabilities. Rather, the statistics mean that as a result of their confusion or remorse over their learning disability, they thus resort to engaging in wrong doing. This is reflective of a misinformation. Learning disabilities are not uncommon and that this disorder cannot, in any way, measure a teen’s level of intelligence. It is important to establish these facts in order to assuage the initial feelings or self-doubt and insecurity that a teen who is diagnosed with learning disabilities inevitably feels.

Basically, learning abilities impair a teen’s ability to learn. It has two categories: Verbal and nonverbal; it also has three basic forms. Dyslexia is a reading disability; Dyscalculia is a math disability; and Dysgraphia is a writing disability.

Having a learning disability is not a license for deciding to become a bad person, or for deciding to get involve in things that tantamount to breaking law and order. Feelings of inadequacy are normal for teens with learning disabilities, but proper dissemination of information should be enforced so as to help them escalate their perceptions of themselves as a responsible member of the society.

Veering Away From ODD

May 29th, 2008

Like most psychological and emotional disorders, the cause of Oppositional Defiant Disorders, or Odd, is yet to be determined by experts on the field of psychology. However, recent studies claim that biological and social factors play major roles in the onset of this disorder.

Focusing on the latter, some experts are working on the assumption that the development of ODD is brought about by a series of experiences that occurred during the early stages of the teen with the ODD. This sequence of occurrences are those that are bordering on the teen’s negative experiences with regards to ineffective parenting practices, as well as poor peer interaction.

Hence, in order to veer away from the possibility of an onset of this disorder, parents are advised to look after their children to a greater extent. Because most disorders’ onset develop during a child’s formative years, it follows that effective parenting practices and authority figures’ functional child rearing techniques should be enforced.

The Coping Game

May 29th, 2008

Teens with Oppositional Defiant Disorder or ODD may be quite a handful. In addition to teens being naturally difficult for parents, having a teen who has ODD is by far harder and more challenging for parents. For this reason, therapists insist that aside from their teen patients, the parents of the teens with ODD should also undergo some sort of training and therapy or counseling sessions. This is in order for the parents to prepare themselves for the challenge that lays ahead, which is basically what parenting a teen who is diagnosed with ODD entails.

Some parents heed the doctors’ advice. However, some brush it off, justifying that they don’t need to undergo such counseling and therapy sessions, or that they don’t have the time to see a specialist, much less attend therapy sessions. While these reasons may seem sound and valid, experts continue to reiterate the importance of family counseling, stating that once a family member is diagnosed to have an emotional or psychological disorder, the chances that the whole family itself will not be affected is very slim.

On that note, parents of ODD teens who cannot or will not undergo counseling are thus advised to at least keep three coping skills in mind. The first and the most important of all is to learn to calm yourself. While this may seem very basic, nevertheless, it is still very essential. The second thing to remember is to take some time off. As parenting ODD teens can be very stressful and frustrating, parents are thus advised to spend some time off to relax, think, and to restore their energy. Finally, therapists say that the last skill is to be forgiving towards your teen. Amidst the overbearing ways and the defiant attitude that they extol, it is necessary to start with a fresh outlook and a clean slate all the time. Thus, in effect, parents should learn to ease themselves of the disappointments, and frustrations that they feel about their children and the situation that the family has to face.

Teens and ODD

May 29th, 2008

Teens are innately oppositional, especially when they are stressed, frustrated, or upset. So when she started to notice that her fourteen-year-old daughter, Kim, has been having frequent temper tantrums, and has been very spiteful lately, often talking in a mean and hateful manner, she didn’t think there was anything odd about it. After all, Kim has always been known to give in to her moods easily. But when Kim started to resort to excessive arguing with her father, Joanna started to worry. In her heart, she knew there was something not quite right about her daughter.

After weeks of convincing Kim to seek medical help, Kim finally obliged.

The doctor conducted a comprehensive evaluation on Kim, asking her about her emotional health history as well as her recent experiences in life. After a while, the doctor gave his diagnosis: Kim was found to have ODD, otherwise known as Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Unfortunately, Kim did not only have ODD. She was also found to be exhibiting symptoms for Conduct Disorder..

Stunned, Joanna started doing research on ODD and on Conduct Disorders. Initially, she found out that ODD can be treated through Parent Training Programs to help manage the child’s behavior, Individual Psychotherapy to develop more effective anger management, Family Psychotherapy to improve communication, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to assist problem solving and decrease negativity, and Social Skills Training to increase flexibility and improve frustration tolerance with peers.

Early intervention

May 28th, 2008

The initial reaction that is most common  when a person is diagnosed with a learning disabiility is dismay.  The second reaction, more often than not, is shame.  Shame, because most people are bothered with the “disability” label that inevitably goes along with learning disabilities.  Further, they also associate learning disabilities with a person’s level of intelligence.  Hence, a person who is diagnosed with a learning disability is bound to feel inadequate, he or she might feel insecure because of the notion that he or she is dumb, and that his or her mental processes are slow. This assumption could not have been farther from the truth.

Early diagnosis of a learning disability is advantageous because it would mean that early interventions may be provided at the early stage of a learning disability. Even though there is currently no cure for learning disabilities, leading a healthy, normal life is not impossible, one can easily manage a learning disability, provided that he or she will adapt a learning strategy that is most suited to him or her. Finding the perfect strategy would mean a close working relationship to your psychologist, as well as a close relationship with your parents or guardian; the people who can help you manage your learning disability.

Learning Disabilities: A Case In Point

May 28th, 2008

Thomas attended his study group in the school library before taking his final exams in algebra. Before this, he studies on his own. He studied for two hours. He often studies on his own before joining his study group, because he knows that studying with his peers will not be enough.

His study group session ended early. He was glad it did; he was getting a little uneasy with the leader of the group, a girl named Natasha, who aced her math tests even without much effort. During their session, Natasha asked him to solve an algebraic expression. It bothered him that he got the wrong answer because he studied prior to their study group’s sessions at the school library.

Then came the big day. Thomas was feeling a little queasy because he know he didn’t do well. He knows that his father, who is a math professor at the local college, will give him a hard time if he flunked this exam. Surprise, surprise! Thomas got his paper later that day. Written in red ink and in bold letters was the letter grade F.

The case of Thomas is not an isolated case. All around the world, regardless of race, class, religion, ethnicity and social class, children and teens are known to have learning disabilities. These are the disabilities are problems that hinder a person from analyzing, comprehending, and learning. Learning disabilities are cause by genetic influences, slow brain development, and environmental factors.

Learning disabilities are categorized as either verbal or nonverbal. Generally, a verbal learning disability means that a person has difficulties in comprehending either or both spoken and written language. On the other hand, nonverbal learning disabilities are characterized by a person’s difficulty in processing what they see.

Getting Over Grief

May 28th, 2008

People who grieve over the loss of someone important in their lives are often told by their therapists to let out, or in a way, to vent out their sadness and longing through creative means.  Chanelling the negative energies of a person who grieves into something that can have an aesthetic or artistic value can help a person endure loneliness, more so if the pain is still fresh and new.

This advice also works well with teens.  It is of utmost importance for them to create something positive out of the negative pent-up emotions that they have.  Otherwise, the pain may become too overwhelming for them, to the point of taking its toll on their emotional health.

Here’s a poem on grief which I found on the internet.

GRIEF IS LIKE A RIVER
By Cinthia G. Kelley

My grief is like a river,
I have to let it flow,
but I myself determine
just where the banks will go.

Some days the current takes me
in waves of guilt and pain,
but there are always quiet pools
where I can rest again.

I crash on rocks of anger;
my faith seems faint indeed,
but there are other swimmers
who know that what I need

Are loving hands to hold me
when the waters are too swift,
and someone kind to listen
when I just seem to drift.

Grief’s river is a process
of relinquishing the past.
By swimming in hope’s channels,
I’ll reach the shore at last.

Origin

We often find it hard to cope with losing someone, or something that we hold dear. This is grief. Grief is basically an emotion that is brought about by the pain of loss. Some people try to put off the feelings brought about by loss, they try to ignore the pain. What we do not realize is that it is not healthy to ignore emotional pain. Failure to acknowledge loss is likely to result in disability. In contrast, grief that is expressed and dealt with has the potential of enriching our lives. Although we deal with grief differently, there are ways to make the end-result of grieving geared towards a more positive context.

The word grief is derived from the Old French word grève, which means “a heavy burden.” Come to think about it, this makes sense because when you grieve, you are also being weighed down by sorrow and loss and longing which inevitably leads to a low mood.
